Where the Puck Is Going to Be

The Presidential Address wove together three distinct topics. The first theme contrasted the critical differences in the vascular surgical community’s response to the introduction of endoluminal aneurysm repair versus their response to endovascular intervention for peripheral arterial disease- the former was marked by early acceptance and resultant leadership of clinical trials & ongoing innovation, whereas the latter was marked by resistance to new technology that ceded clinical leadership to other specialties. The second theme was an insider’s view of the pipeline of biologic modifiers being developed for peripheral arterial interventions. The final theme was a cautionary note regarding the preservation of free speech and unhindered academic pursuits in an era of enforced political orthodoxy within U.S.
